I chose the easy route and used a standard module for charging the Li-Ion battery (18650). I also used a standard step-up module to boost the battery voltage to 5 volts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Operation of the Soft Power Latch Circuit<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Initial state (off)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a at the junction to SW1 and R102)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Q101 has no base current and is \u201copen\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Q102 (MOSFET) is off (its gate is connected to V+ via R101 and R103)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>First press on SW1<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Because C101 is \u201cempty\u201d, the gate of Q102 is pulled to GND, causing Q102 to conduct<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The voltage at LATCH-OUT becomes (approximately) equal to V+<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter happen:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Q101 receives base current via R104<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Q101 turns on (\u201cclosed\u201d), pulling the collector to GND<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The collector of Q101 now pulls the gate of Q102 to GND<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/willem.aandewiel.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/softPowerLatch_S3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"544\" GND<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meanwhile, C101 is charged via R102<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the \u201clatch effect\u201d!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Second press on SW1<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a GND<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pressing SW1 creates a short disturbance causing:<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Q101 to lose its base current and turn off (\u201copen\u201d)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The gate of Q102 to be pulled up again via R101 and R103<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Q102 to turn off, causing the voltage at LATCH-OUT to disappear<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The resistor R105 ensures that there is always \u201ca small load\u201d, which makes the circuit more reliable. The Schottky diode D101 is only needed if you want to switch a motor, because after switching off it keeps spinning for a while and acts like a dynamo, which interferes with the circuit.
